Navratri festival is celebrated to worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga, the Hindu Goddess of Power. This festival is celebrated with great joy and reverence for 9 nights and 10 days.
Navratri celebration is categorized into three parts, each part consisting of three days, first part for Durga, Goddess for power or Shakti, the second Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity and the final for Saraswathi, Maatha for knowledge and wisdom with the tenth day completed as a day of Vijayadasami.
In all these days of Navratra, the devotees of Durga either fast or take only one meal a day. Those find it difficult to observe the fast for nine days, may fast for seven, five or three days.
